Jury Begins Deliberations in Senator Bob Menendez's Bribery and Corruption Trial
Jury deliberations have commenced in the corruption trial of US Senator Bob Menendez. The New Jersey Democrat is accused of accepting bribes and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. Federal prosecutors in New York allege that from 2018 to 2023, Menendez and his wife received gold, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz convertible from three businessmen in exchange for corrupt acts.

Prosecutors claim some bribes were linked to actions benefiting Egypt, such as aiding its access to US military aid. They also accuse Menendez of interfering with criminal investigations and helping a business associate secure an Egyptian government contract. Menendez's lawyers argue that he did nothing wrong and that the gold bars and cash found at his home were not bribe proceeds.
Bribery Allegations and Defence Arguments
Menendez's legal team contends that nearly USD 150,000 in gold bars and over USD 480,000 in cash discovered during a 2022 FBI raid were not from bribes. They argue it was not unusual for Menendez to keep large sums of money at home due to his family's history. His sister, Caridad Gonzalez, testified about their family's escape from Cuba in 1951 with cash hidden in a clock.
Two businessmen, Fred Daibes and Wael Hana, are on trial alongside Menendez. The senator's wife, Nadine Menendez, has had her trial postponed due to breast cancer surgery. All defendants have pleaded not guilty. Menendez did not testify but has publicly denied taking bribes or doing special favours for Egypt.
Key Evidence and Witnesses
The jury must review numerous witnesses' testimonies, hundreds of emails, text messages, financial records, and other documents. Prosecutors presented evidence showing serial numbers on some gold bars matched those given by the businessmen. Jurors will also consider testimony from Jose Uribe, who pleaded guilty in a cooperation deal with the government.
Uribe testified that he assisted Nadine Menendez in obtaining a luxury car in exchange for her husband's help in pressuring prosecutors regarding criminal investigations involving Uribe's associates. Menendez is also accused of using his influence to affect a criminal case involving Daibes, who faces bank fraud charges.
Judge's Instructions and Jury Deliberations
Judge Sidney H. Stein provided the jury with legal instructions on Friday morning to guide their deliberations. He clarified that while American citizens can act as agents of foreign governments, public officials like sitting US senators cannot. The jury began deliberations shortly after 2 pm.
The jury's task is to sift through extensive evidence to reach a verdict. This includes evaluating witness testimonies and various documents presented during the nine-week trial. The outcome hinges on whether they believe the evidence proves Menendez took bribes and acted corruptly.
The trial has garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations against a sitting US senator. The verdict will determine if Menendez is guilty of corruption and acting as an agent for Egypt or if he is innocent as he claims.
