An alarming increase in the Air Quality Index (AQI) over the recent weekend prompted health warnings and raised public alarm. As a consequence, a temporary shutdown of schools starting from November 4, for a duration of at least one week, while mandating that half of the office workforce operates from home has been announced in Lahore, Pakistan. "This smog is very harmful for children," she remarked. Additionally, Aurangzeb pointed out the importance of engaging in cross-border talks with India to address the transboundary pollution issue.

The root causes of Pakistan's escalating pollution crisis include local diesel emissions, the burning of agricultural waste, and the onset of colder weather, which collectively produce a heavy smog layer. The problem has been exacerbated as polluted air from India has crossed into Pakistan, with AQI readings in some regions reaching alarming levels of between 1,500 and 1,800 on Saturday morning.

To combat the dire air quality, Pakistani authorities have implemented several measures, including bans on engine-powered rickshaws and restrictions on unfiltered barbecue vendors. In addition, children have been advised against participating in outdoor activities to reduce their exposure to the hazardous air. UNICEF data reveals that nearly 600 million children across South Asia are exposed to similar levels of pollution, with half of all childhood pneumonia deaths in the region attributable to poor air quality.
