Several Dead, Over 100 Trapped in Northern Nigeria School Collapse
A two-story school building collapsed during morning classes on Friday in north-central Nigeria, trapping around 120 students and teachers. A local television station reported 12 deaths. Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of fatalities at Saints Academy College in Plateau state's Busa Buji community.

According to Channels Television, 26 people were being treated at a nearby hospital, alongside the reported deaths, based on a witness account. Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency stated that rescue and health workers, along with security forces, have been deployed to the scene. The agency mentioned that "several students" had lost their lives.
Rescue Efforts and Government Response
"Approximately 120 people were trapped, with many evacuated," said Plateau Commissioner for Information Musa Ashoms in a statement. "To ensure prompt medical attention, the government has instructed hospitals to prioritise treatment without documentation or payment." The state government attributed the tragedy to the school's "weak structure and location near a riverbank," urging schools with similar issues to close down.
Dozens of villagers gathered near the collapsed school, some weeping while others offered assistance as excavators combed through the debris. One woman was seen wailing and trying to get closer to the rubble, but others held her back.
Frequent Building Collapses in Nigeria
Building collapses are becoming increasingly common in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. More than a dozen such incidents have been recorded in the last two years. Authorities often blame these disasters on a failure to enforce building safety regulations and poor maintenance practices.
The incident has highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and regular maintenance checks to prevent future tragedies. The state government has called for immediate action from schools facing similar structural issues to avoid further loss of life.
The search for survivors continues as rescue teams work tirelessly to clear the rubble and provide medical assistance to those affected. The community remains in shock as they come to terms with the devastating event.
The collapse has sparked discussions about improving infrastructure safety standards across Nigeria. Many hope that this tragic event will lead to significant changes in how buildings are constructed and maintained in the future.
The situation remains fluid as authorities continue their efforts to rescue any remaining survivors and provide support to the affected families. The focus now is on ensuring that such incidents do not recur by addressing the root causes of building collapses in the country.
This tragic event underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations and conducting regular inspections to ensure the integrity of buildings, especially those housing vulnerable populations like students.
