San Francisco Police Detain Pro-Palestinian Protesters at Israeli Consulate

On Monday, San Francisco witnessed a significant pro-Palestinian demonstration that escalated when participants occupied the lobby of a building hosting the Israeli Consulate. The San Francisco Police Department intervened, arresting an unspecified number of protesters. Eyewitnesses reported seeing approximately 50 individuals being detained, their hands secured with zip ties before being transported away in police vans.

Protesters Detained at Consulate

The demonstrators had earlier entered the building, staying for several hours and displaying signs on the front doors demanding an end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Despite multiple warnings from the police to vacate the premises, about five protesters remained inside by late afternoon, while outside, officers processed those already in custody.

Marco Sermoneta, Consul General of Israel to the Pacific Northwest, noted that the protesters gathered around 9 am but did not breach the consulate's offices located within the Financial District's high-rise. The consulate advised people to reschedule their appointments due to the protest. Meanwhile, San Francisco police maintained a perimeter around the building, restricting public access.

The protest comes amid increasing global scrutiny of Israel's military actions in Gaza. The Health Ministry of Gaza reports over 36,000 fatalities without distinguishing between civilians and combatants. Israel attributes civilian casualties to Hamas militants, accusing them of embedding their operations within densely populated areas. The conflict was ignited by a Hamas attack on October 7 in southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths—predominantly civilians—and the abduction of around 250 individuals. It is believed that about 80 hostages are still alive in Gaza.

This incident underscores the growing international concern over the humanitarian impact of the Israel-Hamas war and highlights the complexities surrounding civilian involvement in geopolitical conflicts.
