Dallas, June 30: The first same sex couple got married in Dallas. But what made it more interesting was the fact that they both were in their 80s.

After being together for 54 years and a series of legal battles, Jack Evans, 85, and George Harris, 82 have finally been able to tie the knot, minutes after the U.S Supreme Court's landmark decision to legalize gay marriage nationwide.

DEscribing his happiness and surprise, Evans said,"You would have been blown away by the crowd there, there must have been 450 people there, people waiting to get married, reporters. It was amazing. Just amazing." He further added,"Ten years ago [marriage equality] was not within the realm of possibility."

The founding members of the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce and The Dallas Way, the duo have been documenting the history of gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender communities in Dallas.

Prior to the ruling, Texas had been one of the 13 states where gay marriages were banned. However, the debate is far from over. On Sunday, the state's attorney said that the county clerks in the state can still refuse marriage certificates to same-sex marriages.
