Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Two Sailors in Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Amid Severe Weather Conditions

Two sailors participating in the Sydney to Hobart race have tragically died at sea amid severe weather conditions. The challenging circumstances also led to the withdrawal of the line honours favourite, Master Lock Comanche, among numerous retirements. Despite these setbacks, the race continues as the fleet heads towards Constitution Dock in Hobart, with the first arrivals anticipated later on Friday or early Saturday.

Two Sailors Die in Sydney to Hobart Race

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), based in Sydney and responsible for organising the event, confirmed that one sailor from each of the yachts Flying Fish Arctos and Bowline lost their lives. Both incidents involved the sailors being struck by the boom, a large horizontal pole at the bottom of the sail. The accident on Flying Fish Arctos happened approximately 30 nautical miles east-southeast of Ulladulla on New South Wales' south coast.

Tragic Incidents Amidst Challenging Conditions

Crew members aboard Flying Fish Arctos attempted CPR but were unable to revive their teammate. Similarly, on Bowline, a crew member was hit around 30 nautical miles east/north-east of Batemans Bay and fell unconscious. Despite efforts to administer CPR, they could not be revived. "Our thoughts are with the crews, family and friends of the deceased," stated CYCA in a release. "Further information will be provided as it becomes available."

This tragic event occurs 26 years after a similar incident during the 1998 race when six sailors perished in storms. That disaster led to a state coronial inquiry and significant reforms to enhance safety protocols for future races. The ongoing race is a reminder of both the beauty and danger inherent in competitive sailing.

The race organisers are committed to ensuring safety while honouring those who have lost their lives at sea. As more details emerge, they will continue to update all involved parties. The sailing community remains deeply affected by these losses and is focused on supporting those impacted.
