S Jaishankar's Maldives Visit Sends A Strategic Message To Dhaka - Here's What it Says

During a recent diplomatic visit to the Maldives by India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu addressed the media with a firm stance, asserting that his government would not permit any actions contrary to the nation's foreign policy.

Emphasizing that the Maldives' interests remain the top priority, President Muizzu's statements were made in response to a question regarding the controversial 'India Out' campaign, which had been initiated by the ruling PNC-PPM coalition during their bid for power the previous year.

S Jaishankar s Maldives Visit

India Sends A Strategic Message To Dhaka - Here's What It Is

It was clarified by the President that no alterations had been made to the foreign policy of the Maldives under his leadership. This declaration followed shortly after Minister Jaishankar's departure for India, concluding a two-day visit to the Maldives during which multiple projects were launched.

Throughout Minister Jaishankar's visit, a marked cordiality was exhibited by President Muizzu and his ministers, suggesting a thaw in the previously tense relations between the two nations since President Muizzu's inauguration on November 17th of the previous year, as reported by Hindustan Times.

This apparent shift in tone is understood to be influenced by the severe economic crisis currently afflicting the Maldives. Despite efforts to seek assistance from China and other countries, it has become evident that Maldives faces a significant budgetary shortfall, amounting to several hundred million USD.

In this context, India's financial support has been critical, with India having already extended the deadline for a USD 50 million payment to the State Bank of India in May, and another payment of the same amount due in September. Maldives' looming debt crisis, which includes a market obligation of approximately USD one billion due by 2026, has raised concerns about a potential default, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Although attempts have been made by the Maldives to secure financial aid from Turkey, China, and other Middle Eastern nations, it has become increasingly apparent that only India has been willing and able to provide substantial support during this time of economic duress.

This scenario is reflective of India's broader strategy of extending aid to neighboring countries in times of need, as was also demonstrated in the cases of Sri Lanka and, more recently, Bangladesh. In contrast, other global powers, including China, the United States, and Western nations, have been notably less forthcoming with assistance, as per media reports.

The statement made by President Muizzu is seen as a positive development, indicating a recognition that the rise of Islamist elements in the Maldives does not align with the interests of the new government. Notably, Minister Jaishankar was accorded a reception that surpassed the diplomatic courtesies extended during the tenure of the previous President, Ibrahim Solih.

The message being sent to neighboring countries is clear: India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a formidable partner and should not be underestimated.
