Russian Defence Minister Warns France Against Troop Deployment in Ukraine
In a significant development amid ongoing tensions, Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu communicated a stark warning to his French counterpart, Sébastien Lecornu, regarding the potential deployment of French troops to Ukraine. This conversation, which took place on Wednesday, marks a rare instance of direct communication between the defence ministers of Russia and France since October 2022. The dialogue underscored the complexities surrounding the conflict in Ukraine and hinted at the broader implications of international military involvement.

During this pivotal exchange, Shoigu expressed Moscow's readiness to engage in dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized that any peace talks in Geneva would be futile without Russia's participation. This statement comes in the wake of French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks in February, suggesting that the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine could be a possibility. Shoigu's response to these comments was clear, indicating that such actions by France would lead to direct consequences for the nation itself, although specifics were not provided.
The conversation also revisited discussions from a previous round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine held in Istanbul in March 2022. These talks, which collapsed rapidly, had entertained the notion of Ukraine remaining neutral and foregoing its aspirations to join NATO. The draft document from these negotiations remains a point of reference for potential future discussions.
Additionally, the call touched upon recent tragic events within Russia. Lecornu offered condolences for the March 22 attack on a suburban Moscow concert hall, which resulted in 145 fatalities—the deadliest assault on Russian soil in decades. Despite claims of responsibility by an affiliate of the Islamic State group and prior warnings from the US about an imminent attack, Russian officials have sought to connect Ukraine and Western entities to this act of terror. Shoigu reiterated this stance during his conversation with Lecornu, alleging Ukrainian involvement in organizing the attack and questioning the role of Western intelligence services.
This dialogue between Shoigu and Lecornu not only highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine but also reflects the intricate web of accusations and geopolitical strategies at play. As both sides navigate these turbulent waters, the international community remains watchful of any developments that could influence the course of events in Eastern Europe.
