Russia-Ukraine Truce 'Very Much On Track', Says Trump After Phone Call With Zelenskyy

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump stated that he had discussed Russian and Ukrainian requests and requirements for a peace agreement during a one-hour phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Much of the conversation focused on yesterday's call with President Putin, aimed at aligning both Russia and Ukraine regarding their respective requests and needs," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "We are very much on track," he added.

The Kremlin also announced on Wednesday that Putin and Trump "trust each other" and share a mutual desire to restore normal US-Russia relations, following more than three years of Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine.

"Presidents Putin and Trump have a good understanding, trust one another, and are committed to gradually working towards the normalisation of relations," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. He noted that the two leaders' phone conversation on Tuesday lasted approximately two hours.

Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy cautioned against responding to the Kremlin's calls to cease military aid to Ukraine, stating that he would address the matter with Trump later.

Putin had made this demand following his call with Trump on Tuesday.

"I firmly believe that there should be no concessions regarding military assistance for Ukraine; rather, support should be increased," Zelenskyy said at a joint press conference with Finnish President Alexander Stubb.

The conversation between Trump and Putin did not result in the breakthrough ceasefire that Ukraine has been advocating, after endorsing the US-led proposal last week.

However, the Kremlin announced that it had agreed to suspend Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy expressed hope of obtaining further details during his discussion with Trump.

"Today, I will be in contact with President Trump, and we will discuss the next steps," Zelenskyy stated.
