Russia Offers Asylum To Exiled Bashar Al-Assad After Rebel Victory, Kremlin Confirms

In a significant diplomatic move, Russia has granted political asylum to former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, following his resignation and departure from Syria after a surprise rebel offensive that ended his regime. The announcement was made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Monday, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin made the decision to offer asylum to Assad, who fled Syria on Sunday after rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), successfully captured the capital, Damascus. The fall of Assad's regime marks the end of a brutal 13-year-long civil war, ignited by his government's violent crackdown on anti-government protests.

However, Peskov refrained from commenting on Assad's specific whereabouts and stated that President Putin had no plans to meet with the former leader, as reported by Hindustan Times. The Kremlin's stance is a reflection of the complicated political dynamics at play, with Russia maintaining its strategic interests in Syria while offering refuge to Assad amid the ongoing turmoil.

The downfall of Bashar al-Assad's rule comes just 11 days after the rebel forces launched a surprise attack, triggering a swift and unprecedented collapse of his government. For more than a decade, Assad's regime had been embroiled in the Syrian civil war, which caused widespread devastation and led to the displacement of millions of people.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of HTS, celebrated the victory, calling it "historic for the region." He addressed supporters in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, marking the end of an era for Syria. The loss of Assad's regime brings to a close a turbulent chapter for the Middle East, although the future of Syria remains uncertain as various factions vie for power in the wake of Assad's departure, as per media reports.

The situation continues to unfold, with global implications, as the international community watches closely to see how the Syrian conflict will evolve in the post-Assad era.
