Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Warns Against Nuclear Conflict in UN Speech Targeting the West

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, cautioned against engaging in a conflict with a nuclear power during his speech at the UN General Assembly. He criticised Western actions in Ukraine and elsewhere, including within the UN. This comes after President Vladimir Putin hinted at changes in Russia's nuclear policy. Lavrov accused the West of using Ukraine to strategically undermine Moscow and warned Europe against joining this risky venture.

Russia Warns Against Nuclear Conflict at UN

Lavrov stated, "I'm not going to talk here about the senselessness and the danger of the very idea of trying to fight to victory with a nuclear power, which is what Russia is." The threat of nuclear confrontation has loomed over the Ukraine conflict since it began. Just before the invasion, Putin reminded the world of Russia's nuclear capabilities and placed its forces on high alert shortly after.

Nuclear Tensions and Western Reactions

Putin recently declared that if Russia is attacked by any nation supported by a nuclear-armed country, it would be considered a joint attack. Although he didn't specify if this would trigger a nuclear response, he emphasised that Russia might use nuclear weapons if faced with a conventional attack threatening its sovereignty. The US and EU labelled these remarks as "irresponsible."

The new stance seems directed at the US and other Western nations as Ukraine seeks permission to use longer-range weapons against Russia. The Biden administration announced an additional $2.7 billion in military aid for Ukraine but did not include long-range arms or approval for their use deep within Russian territory.

Ukraine's Military Efforts and Peace Proposals

Over two and a half years into the conflict, Russia continues to make gradual progress in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine has launched missile and drone attacks on Russian soil and embarrassed Moscow with a daring incursion into a border region last month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a peace plan aimed at ending the war.

Zelenskyy's peace formula includes expelling Russian forces from Ukraine, ensuring accountability for war crimes, freeing prisoners of war, and more. However, Lavrov dismissed this plan as a "doomed ultimatum." He argued that resolving the conflict requires addressing its "root causes," which Moscow claims involve Kyiv's repression of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine and NATO's expansion in Eastern Europe.

Western Military Aid and Strategic Concerns

The US did not immediately respond to Lavrov's speech, with only a junior diplomat present during his address. As Ukraine continues to seek Western support for its military efforts, strategic concerns remain over how far this support should extend. The ongoing conflict raises questions about regional security dynamics and international diplomatic efforts.

As tensions persist, both sides continue to navigate complex geopolitical landscapes while seeking resolutions that address their respective security concerns. The situation remains fluid as diplomatic channels remain open for potential negotiations.
