Putin Rejects Space Nuclear Weapon Plans, Citing Treaty Commitments

Russian President Vladimir Putin dismisses claims of planning to deploy nuclear weapons in space, asserting Russias adherence to existing agreements. This response comes after the White House expressed concerns about Russias anti-satellite weapon capabilities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin firmly denied any intentions to deploy nuclear weapons in space, emphasizing that Moscow's space capabilities are comparable to those of the United States. Putin's statement comes in response to recent White House claims that Russia has acquired a concerning anti-satellite weapon capability, although it is not yet operational.

Putins Space Assurance: No Nuclear Weapons, Just Treaty Compliance

Concerns Raised Over Potential Violation of Outer Space Treaty

The White House national security spokesman, John Kirby, expressed concerns that Russia's anti-satellite weapon capability could violate the international Outer Space Treaty. The treaty, signed by over 130 countries including Russia, prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons or any other types of weapons of mass destruction in orbit or the stationing of weapons in outer space in any other manner. Kirby declined to comment on whether the weapon is nuclear-capable.

Russia's Position on Nuclear Weapons in Space

Putin unequivocally stated Russia's position against the deployment of nuclear weapons in space. He emphasized that Russia has always been and remains categorically opposed to such actions and urged all nations to adhere to existing agreements in this sphere.

Russia's Space Capabilities

During a meeting with his defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, Putin highlighted that Russia's space capabilities are similar to those of other nations, including the United States. Shoigu further clarified that Russia has not deployed any nuclear weapons or elements of them in space to target satellites or disrupt their operations.

Allegations Linked to Ukraine Aid and Nuclear Arms Control Talks

Shoigu suggested that the White House's allegations of Russia's new space capability could be an attempt to pressure Congress into supporting aid for Ukraine and to encourage Moscow to reenter nuclear arms control talks. Russia suspended its participation in these talks due to escalating tensions with the US over the Ukraine conflict.

Putin's Stance on Future Contacts with the US

While Putin did not rule out the possibility of future contacts with the US, he reiterated his belief that Washington's pursuit of Russia's defeat in Ukraine makes any meaningful dialogue impossible at present. He criticized the US and the West for calling for Russia's strategic defeat while simultaneously seeking discussions on strategic stability, asserting that these matters are inextricably linked.
