Russia and India Set to Discuss Bollywood Boost During Upcoming Putin-Modi Meeting

Bollywood has long been cherished in Russia, from classics like Raj Kapoor’s ‘Awara’ to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathan’. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at discussing ways to further promote Indian films in Russia during his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi is set to visit Kazan for the BRICS Summit on October 22-23.

Putin and Modi to Discuss Bollywood Boost

During a conversation with foreign journalists, Putin remarked, "I think that in this country, Indian films are more popular than anywhere else." He noted that Russia even has a dedicated TV channel broadcasting Indian movies continuously. However, he acknowledged the need for discussions on marketing Indian films in Russia, alongside sectors like pharmaceuticals and automotive.

Focus on Economic Collaboration

Putin highlighted the economic aspect of cinema, stating, "Cinema products and film industry are a part of the economy, and is to be duly regulated. India has made a lot of decisions to protect its own market." He emphasised that this concern extends beyond just films to include other industries such as automotive.

The Russian President expressed optimism about finding mutual interests with India. "But we are positive that if the Indian friends have this interest, we will find common ground to promote Indian films to the Russian market," he said. He described Indian films as a "very relevant and popular product" alongside pharmaceuticals.

Upcoming Discussions at BRICS Summit

Putin conveyed his readiness to engage with Prime Minister Modi during the BRICS Summit in Kazan. He stated confidently, "I am sure we will come to terms 100 per cent." This meeting could potentially pave the way for stronger cultural and economic ties between the two nations.

The potential discussions between Putin and Modi could lead to increased visibility for Indian cinema in Russia. This aligns with broader efforts to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors. The outcome of these talks may significantly impact how Indian films are marketed and consumed in Russia.
