Russia: Massive 7.1 Earthquake Strikes Near East Coast Of Kamchatka; Tsunami Warning Issued

The United States has issued a tsunami warning following a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

This latest tremor comes just days after the region was rocked by a massive 8.8-magnitude quake-one of the strongest ever recorded globally. That earlier quake, which hit in July, triggered widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, affecting countries like Japan and the US, as well as several island nations.

The epicenter of Saturday's quake was located approximately 111.7 km (69.3 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 39 km (24 miles). So far, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but authorities remain vigilant as they assess the potential for tsunami activity.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is no stranger to seismic upheaval. In 1952, the region experienced a devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake during the Soviet era-one of the largest in recorded history. More recently, July's 8.8-magnitude quake was the most powerful globally in the past 14 years and the most severe since Japan's catastrophic 9.1-magnitude quake in 2011.

In response to the July quake, US officials placed Hawaii, Alaska, California, and other western coastal states under tsunami watch. Hawaii and Alaska were issued direct warnings, prompting emergency protocols and preparations for potential coastal impact.
