Russia Claims Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Has Fled Country, Rebels Ruling Damascus

Syrian rebels have declared victory in Damascus, marking the end of Bashar al-Assad's long-standing rule. On Sunday, they announced the capture of the capital, proclaiming an end to Assad's "tyranny" that spanned five decades. The swift offensive by rebel forces has brought significant changes to the region.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that President Bashar al-Assad has left Syria. He reportedly ordered a peaceful transition of power before his departure. However, Russia stated it was not involved in discussions regarding his exit. Their military bases in Syria are on high alert but face no immediate threat.

Rebel Forces and Regional Dynamics

Commander Golani of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) expressed determination to continue their mission from 2011. In a statement on state television, he said, "The future is ours... There is no room for turning back." This sentiment reflects the rebels' resolve to shape Syria's future.

Meanwhile, Turkey-backed Syrian forces have advanced into Manbij after seizing control from Kurdish forces allied with the US. A Turkish source told Reuters that operations against YPG/PKK are nearing success. Both air and ground interventions are ongoing to reclaim Manbij from Kurdish control.

Celebrations and Military Movements

In Damascus, fighters and residents celebrated the rebels' takeover. Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham led factions in declaring the city "liberated." They announced, "We announce the freedom of our city and the fall of the tyrant Assad," marking a significant moment for many Syrians.

The Syrian Interim Government's Ministry of Defense reported an attack on Manbij starting December 7. Rebel forces have been actively engaging in this strategic area as part of their broader campaign against Kurdish militias.

Assad's Departure and Uncertain Future

Reports emerged suggesting Assad's plane might have crashed or been shot down during his escape attempt from Damascus. Syrian state television aired footage of a rebel group claiming Assad had been overthrown, coinciding with reports of his flight to an undisclosed location.

This development marks a pivotal shift in Syria's political landscape. The rebels' success in capturing Damascus signals potential changes ahead for the country as they seek to establish new governance structures.
