Robert Tucker Takes Helm as New York City's Fire Commissioner
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Robert S. Tucker, the leader of a private security firm, as the new head of the city's fire department. Tucker, aged 54, succeeds Laura Kavanagh, who was the first woman to serve as the city's fire commissioner.

"I can think of no higher calling than serving as a fire commissioner of New York," Tucker, the chairman and CEO of security firm T&M USA, stated at a news conference. "This is truly a dream come true." Despite his new role, Tucker has never worked as a firefighter, similar to his predecessor Kavanagh.
Background and Experience
Tucker has been involved with the FDNY Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that raises funds for the fire department. During his teenage years, he interned in the Manhattan communications office of the fire department. He mentioned that this experience made him "obsessed" with mapping multiple-alarm fires in the borough.
"From that summer job and that paper map I became absolutely captivated by the business of public safety," Tucker said. "Because, well, what's not to love?"
Educational and Professional Journey
A native of New York City, Tucker graduated from George Washington University and Pace University School of Law. Before joining T&M USA, he spent nearly ten years working in the Queens district attorney's office. There, he served as special assistant to then-District Attorney Richard A. Brown.
As fire commissioner, Tucker will oversee 17,000 employees and manage a $2 billion budget for the fire department.
