Rio Goes Into Lockdown: 25,000 Troops, Drones, and Cameras Guard G20 Summit!

As the G20 Summit kicks off in Rio de Janeiro on November 18, 2024, the city has been transformed into a high-security zone, with 25,000 soldiers and police officers deployed to ensure the safety of world leaders and delegates. This heightened security comes ahead of the two-day event, which has drawn prominent global figures such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Security Measures Ramp Up Across Rio

Rio Goes Into Lockdown

Rio de Janeiro, typically known for its relaxed atmosphere, is now fortified with extensive security measures. In addition to the 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel, thousands of security cameras have been installed across the city. The epicenter of the summit is the Museum of Modern Art, located on a picturesque bay with views of the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain. The museum will host critical discussions on issues such as poverty, climate change, and multilateral cooperation.

Holiday Declared, Airport Operations Disrupted

To ensure smooth operations during the summit, Rio has declared a two-day public holiday, starting November 18, with the aim of minimizing disruptions. Domestic flights from the Santos Dumont Airport, located near the summit venue, have been redirected to the more distant Galeao International Airport. The heightened security also extends to Rio's waterfront, with the Navy stepping up patrols along the popular Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.

Surveillance Takes to the Skies and Streets

Rio's streets are under constant watch with more than 5,000 street cameras, while drones and helicopters will monitor the situation from the skies. The city's airspace and surrounding waters are also being closely surveilled, ensuring a comprehensive security presence during the summit.

Ensuring a Smooth Summit Amid Challenges

Lucas Padilha, the head of Rio's municipal G20 organizing committee, acknowledged the challenge of securing such a large-scale event. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a decree empowering the military to intervene if extraordinary circumstances arise during the summit.

G20 Summit Agenda

The leaders of the world's leading economies will focus on critical global issues, such as combating poverty, boosting climate financing, and advancing multilateral initiatives. These discussions come at a time when the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan is struggling to make significant progress, particularly on financing for developing countries.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged G20 members, responsible for 80% of global emissions, to demonstrate leadership and compromise to reach meaningful agreements on climate action. At the last G20 summit in India, world leaders had called for a tripling of renewable energy sources by 2030 but avoided committing to phasing out fossil fuels.

As the G20 summit continues to unfold in Rio, the city remains under tight security to safeguard its global leaders and the future of international cooperation on pressing global challenges.
