Retaliatory Tariffs Could Harm US: Elon Musk's Tesla Warns Donald Trump Administration
In an unsigned letter addressed to Jamieson Greer, the US trade representative, Tesla expressed its support for fair trade but urged the US administration to avoid inadvertently harming American companies. "As a US manufacturer and exporter," Tesla stated, "we encourage the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to consider the downstream impacts of certain proposed actions taken to address unfair trade practices."
The electric vehicle (EV) sector, including Tesla, is expected to face further challenges due to tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. These tariffs are anticipated to affect vehicles and parts manufactured worldwide, as highlighted by Tesla.

Elon Musk's Tesla has experienced a significant decline in global sales and a $120 billion decrease in net worth.
Impact on Global Sales
Tesla's sales have been notably affected in Europe. According to Time magazine, Tesla sold 7,517 vehicles in Europe this January, which is half of what it sold during the same month last year. In Germany, where Musk supports a far-right political party, sales plummeted by almost 70% compared to January of the previous year.
Sales figures also showed significant declines in other European countries. Reuters reported that Tesla's sales dropped by 50% in Portugal and 45% in France. Additionally, Sweden saw a 42% decrease, while Norway experienced a 48% reduction in sales.
Trade Concerns and Recommendations
Tesla emphasized that US exporters are inherently vulnerable when other nations respond to American trade actions. The company urged USTR to consider exports from the United States when assessing potential actions aimed at rectifying unfair trade practices. "For example," Tesla noted, "past trade actions by the United States have resulted in immediate reactions by targeted countries, including increased tariffs on electric vehicles imported into those countries."
The company also recommended that USTR evaluate possible trade actions with consideration for implementation timelines. A phased approach would allow US companies to prepare adequately and ensure appropriate supply chain and compliance measures are taken.
Political Reactions and Public Protests
This week on Truth Social, Trump claimed that "Radical Left Lunatics" are attempting an illegal boycott against Tesla. On Tuesday, Trump purchased a new red Tesla Model X with Elon Musk present. As he settled into the driver's seat, Trump remarked, "Wow, that's beautiful."
Meanwhile, anti-DOGE protesters recently gathered near Tesla stores to express their discontent with Musk's efforts to reduce government funding. Protesters held banners with messages like "Elon must go away" and "honk if Elon Musk should be fired."
