The incident, which occurred quietly without sparking a bilateral diplomatic row, highlighted Australia's vigilance against foreign interference. According to the ABC report, the Indian officials allegedly targeted both former and current Australian politicians. They were also accused of monitoring activities within the Australian-Indian community, indicating a broad scope of espionage objectives.
The expulsion of these officers placed India in a category alongside countries like Russia and China, known for their aggressive intelligence-gathering activities abroad, as reported by India Today. This revelation came in the wake of previous disclosures by Mike Burgess, the head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), who mentioned in 2021 about disrupting a "nest of spies" operating within Australia.
Burgess emphasized the professional and discreet manner in which these foreign operatives were confronted and removed from the country. Earlier in April 2024, The Washington Post had also reported on the expulsion of two officers from India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), further highlighting concerns over Indian intelligence activities in Australia, as per India Today report.
The actions taken by the Australian government under then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison underscored its commitment to safeguarding national security and protecting democratic institutions from external influence, as per media report. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, while not confirming specific incidents, reiterated the importance of defending Australia's democracy and resilience against foreign interference through existing legal frameworks.
The reports and statements surrounding these incidents have drawn attention to ongoing challenges posed by foreign espionage and the measures taken by countries like Australia to counter such threats.
