Raksha Bandhan celebrated in Trinidad

The tradition of Raksha Bandhan was introduced when the East Indian population, originally sourced from India, mainly from the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, landed here between 1845 and 1917. Indians constitute about 35 percent of the 1.3 million population of the twin Caribbean islands.
Scores of shops in the city were busy till Saturday night selling amulets which were imported from India. Some even sold the amulets Sunday to cater to last minute shoppers. On Sunday, women tied the amulets on their brothers' wrists and were showered with gifts in return.
In temples, 'pundits' (priests) offered prayers not only for the continued support and love for brothers and sisters, but also for entire families.
A few restaurants even had special menus to mark the festival.
