Rafale Marine Deal: India and France Strengthen Naval Forces with Rs 63,000 Crore Agreement
On Monday, India and France are expected to complete a major defence agreement worth Rs 63,000 crore, which will include the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine planes to strengthen the nation's naval capabilities, particularly for use aboard the INS Vikrant. The goal of the agreement is to replace the poorly performing MiG-29K aircraft, which have had maintenance and operational issues.
Representatives from the French Embassy and the Indian Defence Ministry will attend the official signing ceremony in New Delhi. The French and Indian defence ministers are likely to attend virtually, while India's defence secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, is slated to represent the country.

India's naval aviation is expected to be strengthened with the purchase of the 26 Rafale Marine planes, especially for use on the recently commissioned INS Vikrant. The Rafale M planes are a crucial temporary fix because the nation's aircraft carriers, which house the current MiG-29K fleet, have been having maintenance problems. These aircraft will be integrated into the air wing of INS Vikrant, a vital component of India's naval strategy, after being particularly modified to satisfy Indian operational requirements.
This agreement follows India's 2016 separate agreement to purchase 36 Rafale aircraft for the Indian Air Force. With the new agreement, India would have 62 Rafale fighters overall, strengthening its fleet of cutting-edge 4.5-generation fighter jets. After the agreement is signed, the French minister is scheduled to land in India on Sunday night and leave late on Monday.
This purchase represents a significant turning point in India's attempts to update its armed forces, especially its naval aviation, in response to the region's escalating security threats.
