Racist tweets flow after Indian-American wins Miss America crown

Indian-American crowned Miss America
Atlantic City, Sept 16: In what appeared to be a new page in the history of Miss America's beauty pageant, the crowning moment took a sour turn when Indian- American Nina Davuluri was crowned as the new Miss America on Sunday night.

Moments after Davuluri was crowned, a barrage of racist tweets flooded the internet, questioning her origin and the jury's decision.

Many vented their anger out on Twitter, saying that to be Miss America, one must be an American and even made remarks about her being an Arab, who happened to win the pageant.

However the people failed to acknowledge that Davuluri is in fact an American of Indian heritage.

As much as hatred made its way on the internet, post the crowning moment, there were many supporters who gave a thumbs up to the incident saying 'this was indeed celebrating diversity.'

Davuluri is the first Indian-American to win the title

24-year -old Davuluri, became the first contestant of Indian heritage to win the title. She aspires to become a physician like her father.

During the talent round, she showcased a classical Bollywood fusion dance piece. She confessed to have struggled with her weight before the pageant. Looks now she'll have to struggle with the racial slur.
