Putin Set to Visit India as New Delhi Pushes Back Against US Tariffs

As tensions rise between India and the United States over trade and energy policy, New Delhi and Moscow appear to be moving closer. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India later this month, signalling a renewed push to strengthen bilateral ties amid mounting pressure from Washington.

The news of Putin's anticipated visit was disclosed by India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his recent trip to Moscow on August 7, as reported by Russian agency Interfax. While the Indian government has yet to officially confirm the visit, it is being seen as a significant diplomatic development given the current global climate.

India and Russia Strengthening Strategic Partnership

Putin's visit is expected to underscore the India-Russia strategic partnership, particularly in defence, energy, and trade. It also comes at a time when New Delhi is facing punitive trade measures from Washington for maintaining energy ties with Moscow.

India has consistently defended its crude oil imports from Russia, citing national interest and energy security. The deepening engagement between the two countries sends a clear message that India will continue to pursue an independent foreign policy.

US Tariffs Trigger Diplomatic Backlash

The announcement of Putin's visit closely follows the imposition of new US tariffs on Indian exports. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order slapping an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods-raising the total to 50%-in response to India's continued oil trade with Russia.

The White House has accused India of importing Russian petroleum products directly or through intermediaries, despite Western efforts to isolate Moscow economically. The decision places India and Brazil among the nations facing the highest tariffs under current US trade policies.

In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs condemned the move as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable," and assured that necessary steps will be taken to safeguard national interests.

PM Modi Says: "India Will Not Compromise"

Addressing the issue head-on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will not bow to external pressure. Speaking at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in Delhi, he stated, "For us, the interest of our farmers is our top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it, and I am ready for it. India is ready for it."

Busy Diplomatic Calendar

Putin's expected visit to India is set against a backdrop of intense diplomatic activity. Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to travel to Japan and China on August 28 for key bilateral discussions. These engagements reflect India's evolving role in a shifting global order, balancing strategic autonomy with economic resilience.

The US tariffs are slated to take effect 21 days after their announcement, setting the stage for heightened diplomatic and trade friction. At the same time, the potential Putin-Modi summit may mark a pivotal moment in India's bid to recalibrate global alliances in favour of multipolar engagement.
