Putin Engages in Talks with Slovakian PM Fico During Rare EU Leader Visit to Moscow
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, at the Kremlin on Sunday. This visit marks a rare occasion for an EU leader to travel to Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Fico's visit was a "working visit," and discussions focused on the international situation and Russian natural gas supplies.

Fico's stance on Russia's conflict with Ukraine significantly diverges from most European leaders. After his leftist party, Smer Direction, won parliamentary elections last year, he returned to power on a pro-Russia and anti-American platform. Since then, he has ceased Slovakia's military support for Ukraine, criticised EU sanctions against Russia, and pledged to oppose Ukraine's NATO membership.
European Leaders' Interactions with Russia
Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, interactions between European leaders and Putin have been infrequent. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Russia in July, which led to criticism from Kyiv and other European leaders. Fico's visit is notable due to its rarity among EU leaders since the invasion began.
Fico has also been one of the few senior EU politicians to appear on Russian state television following the invasion. In an interview with Rossiya-1 in October, he expressed his intention to attend a military parade in Moscow next May. This event will commemorate the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II.
Russia's Victory Day Celebrations
The Kremlin uses its annual "Victory Day" celebrations to highlight its military achievements. During this year's event, Putin praised Russian troops fighting in Ukraine as "heroes." These celebrations serve as a platform for Russia to showcase its battlefield prowess.
The discussions between Putin and Fico underscore the complex dynamics between Russia and certain EU nations amid ongoing tensions over Ukraine. The meeting highlights differing perspectives within Europe regarding relations with Russia and the conflict in Ukraine.
The meeting between Putin and Fico reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts despite strained relations between Russia and many European countries. As tensions persist, such interactions remain significant in shaping future diplomatic engagements.
