Putin Meets Azerbaijani President in Baku to Bolster Trade and Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday during a two-day visit aimed at bolstering trade routes and strengthening ties in the South Caucasus. The meeting, held in Baku, focused significantly on business relations. Aliyev announced a $120 million investment to enhance cargo transport between the two nations.

Aliyev highlighted that the investment aims to facilitate the transportation of 15 million tons of cargo annually or more. He noted that last year, Russia-Azerbaijan trade turnover surpassed $4 billion, indicating strong economic ties. "Neither of us think that is where things will stop," he added.

Putin's efforts to secure these ties are crucial as Russia faces sanctions over its war on Ukraine. Independent political scientist Zardusht Alizade commented, "Azerbaijan is an important transit country for Russia at a time when it needs to have free access to world markets, including Iran and ports in the Indian Ocean."
