Puntland Executes Six Moroccans Linked to ISIS
A military court in Somalias Puntland region sentenced six Moroccans to death for their alleged involvement with the Islamic State extremist group. The individuals were accused of entering Somalia to harm Muslims and Somalis and incite unrest.
In a significant development, a military court in Somalia's northeastern semi-autonomous state of Puntland has sentenced six Moroccan nationals to death for their alleged involvement with the Islamic State (IS) extremist group. The individuals were found guilty of entering Somalia with the intention of harming Muslims and Somalis, as well as inciting unrest within the country.

Details of the Sentencing
The presiding judge in the Puntland region, Col. Ali Ibrahim Osman, announced the verdict late Thursday. The six convicted individuals, identified as Mohamed Hassan, Ahmed Najwi, Khalid Latha, Mohamed Binu Mohamed Ahmed, Ridwan Abdulkadir Osmany, and Ahmed Hussein Ibrahim, have the right to appeal the decision. However, if their appeals are unsuccessful, they will face execution by firing squad.
In addition to the Moroccan nationals, an Ethiopian and a Somali were also sentenced to 10 years in prison each for their involvement with IS. Meanwhile, another Somali defendant was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Confessions and Repatriation Requests
During the trial, the eight men claimed that they were misled into joining the IS group and expressed a desire to be repatriated to their home countries. Col. Osman revealed that the six Moroccans had received training with IS at its base in the Cal-Miskaat Mountains in northeastern Somalia, which serves as a stronghold for the extremist organization.
Background of IS in Somalia
The Somali branch of IS was established in 2015 by a group of defectors from the al-Qaida-affiliated al-Shabab group, which is the most prominent jihadist organization in Somalia. Unlike al-Shabab, the IS branch in Somalia primarily engages in small-scale, sporadic attacks and is known for extorting locals.
Significance of the Sentencing
This marks the first instance where authorities in the semi-autonomous Puntland region have charged and sentenced foreign nationals for joining IS. The move highlights the region's commitment to combating terrorism and maintaining stability.
Conclusion
The sentencing of the six Moroccans to death and the imprisonment of the other individuals involved with IS sends a strong message that Somalia will not tolerate the presence of extremist groups within its borders. The ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the country are crucial for ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and the region as a whole.
