Punjab Inquiry Committee Confirms Fabrication of Rape Story Involving College Student

A committee of seven members, formed by Punjab's government in Pakistan, investigated an alleged rape at a private college in Gulberg. The inquiry concluded that no such incident took place. The findings were submitted after the investigation was completed.

Punjab Inquiry Finds Rape Allegation Fabricated

The committee, led by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, was established by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Their report indicated that the rape news was fabricated and spread through fake social media accounts to create unrest and disrupt law and order, according to The Dawn newspaper.

Disinformation and Its Impact

The report highlighted the involvement of individuals with vested interests who used the situation for political gain. It expressed concern over how students were manipulated and the chaos caused by spreading false information. The committee noted the psychological and social harm inflicted on the alleged victim and her family.

It recommended that the government provide suitable support to the family affected by these events. The inquiry confirmed that no rape occurred at the girls' college. "The fabricated incident was part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at inciting unrest and damaging public order," stated the report.

Response from Authorities

The report criticised the college management for not handling the situation professionally. It pointed out a lack of proper systems and protocols to address such incidents effectively. In response to growing student protests against the alleged on-campus rape, Punjab's government closed all educational institutions in the province for three days starting Friday.

Both public and private schools, colleges, and universities were shut from Friday to Sunday. Punjab police reported arresting over 600 students across the province due to violent protests. However, a police spokesperson mentioned that several arrested students were released after their parents provided undertakings.

The situation underscores the need for accurate information dissemination and effective crisis management in educational institutions. Ensuring proper protocols are in place can prevent similar disruptions in the future.
