President Droupadi Murmu Concludes State Visit to Portugal and Departs for Slovak Republic
President Droupadi Murmu wrapped up her two-day State visit to Portugal, where she engaged with top leaders and the Indian diaspora. This visit strengthened the longstanding relationship between India and Portugal, rooted in historical connections, cultural ties, and diaspora links. External Affairs Ministry Secretary West Tanmaya Lal highlighted this during a media briefing.

On the final day of her visit, President Murmu met Prime Minister Luis Montenegro at his official residence. She also visited the National Assembly of Portugal and met its President, Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco. Celebrating 50 years since diplomatic ties were re-established, these meetings underscored the importance of the partnership.
India-Portugal Partnership and Diaspora Engagement
The India-Portugal partnership significantly contributes to the India-EU strategic alliance. It also enhances India's engagement with Portuguese-speaking Lusophone countries, where India is an Associate member of the CPLP, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. This partnership is crucial for fostering international relations.
President Murmu paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi before visiting a Radha Krishna temple. Here, she interacted with members of the Comunidade Hindu, Portugal Hindu Community. This community began settling in Portugal after Mozambique's decolonisation in 1975.
Historical Ties and Cultural Connections
The historical ties between India and Portugal experienced a brief pause during Portugal's dictatorship. Diplomatic relations resumed in 1975 with the return of democracy. The Comunidade Hindu, officially recognised in 1982, has about 9,000 members, primarily from Mozambique and Gujarat.
The community received land from Lisbon's then-Mayor Krus Abcasis for a symbolic 15,000 Escudos (around 75,000 Euros). The temple complex spans 15,000 square feet and serves as a sociocultural hub for the community.
Scientific Engagement and Future Visits
President Murmu also visited the Champalimaud Centre For the Unknown. There, she engaged in discussions with Indian researchers. This interaction highlighted India's commitment to scientific collaboration and innovation.
After concluding her visit to Portugal, President Murmu departed for Vienna on a Special VVIP Air Forces Boeing flight. From Vienna, she will travel by land to Bratislava in Slovakia. This marks a significant State visit as no Indian President has visited Slovakia in 29 years.
During her two-day stay in Slovakia, President Murmu will meet with the country's president, prime minister, and Speaker of the National Assembly. She will also visit a Tata Motors Jaguar Land Rover facility in Nitra. These engagements aim to strengthen bilateral ties further.
