President Joe Biden Contracts COVID-19 Amid Las Vegas Campaign

US President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while in Las Vegas, experiencing mild symptoms such as general malaise, according to the White House. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden will return to his home in Delaware to self-isolate and continue his duties.

Biden Tests Positive for COVID-19

The news was initially shared by Unidos US President and CEO Janet Murguía at the group's convention in Las Vegas. She informed attendees that Biden could not attend due to his positive COVID-19 test. Dr. Kevin O'Connor, Biden's physician, noted that the president presented with upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and non-productive cough.

President's Health and Treatment

Following his positive test, Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and has taken his first dose. Paxlovid is known to reduce the risk of severe illness and death when administered early in an infection but can sometimes lead to rebound infections.

Biden had planned to speak at the Unidos event in Las Vegas to rally Hispanic voters ahead of the November election. Instead, he left for Delaware, where he intended to spend a long weekend at his Rehoboth Beach home. Before departing, he told reporters, "I feel good," as he boarded Air Force One without wearing a mask.

Previous COVID-19 Cases

Biden had previously tested positive for COVID-19 twice in the summer of 2022, experiencing both a primary case and a rebound infection. He has been vaccinated and is up-to-date on his annual booster dose. Vaccines have significantly reduced serious illness and death from COVID-19, which has claimed over 1 million lives in the US since 2020.

Earlier in the day, Biden visited the Original Lindo Michoacan restaurant in Las Vegas, greeting diners and participating in an interview with Univision. His positive test comes amid rising emergency room visits and hospitalisations due to COVID-19 across much of the country, particularly in the southwestern US.

Health officials have reported an increase in positive test results nationwide. The president's diagnosis highlights ongoing concerns about COVID-19 as cases continue to rise.

Biden's commitment to self-isolation ensures he can manage his health while fulfilling his presidential responsibilities. The White House remains vigilant about his condition and treatment progress.

The president's experience underscores the importance of vaccination and timely medical intervention in managing COVID-19 symptoms effectively.
