Prague to Budapest Train Hits Bus in Slovakia: 5 Killed, 5 Injured
A train travelling from Prague to Budapest collided with a bus in southern Slovakia on Thursday, resulting in at least five fatalities and five injuries, according to officials. The Eurocity train had over 100 passengers when the accident occurred around 5 pm local time in Nove Zamky, police and Slovak railway company ZSSK reported.

The Slovak rescue service confirmed the deaths and injuries, noting that none of the deceased were on the train. Video footage showed the train's engine on fire, while railway officials stated that the bus was severely damaged. Interior Minister Matus Sutai Estok was en route to the accident site, police said.
Train and Bus Collision
The major railway line connecting Bratislava with Budapest has been closed indefinitely. Passengers stranded on the train were being transported by buses to Sturovo, near the Hungarian border, ZSSK said. The injured were taken to hospitals in nearby towns as the local hospital was closed due to flooding from heavy rain overnight.
The Czech Railways, which owns the train, stated that the engine driver, a Czech national, sustained light burns. The other four injured individuals were passengers on the train. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, noting that the crossing is protected by gates.
Response and Investigation
President Peter Pellegrini, attending a European Union summit in Brussels, expressed his condolences to the victims' families. "I wish the injured a speedy recovery and thank the doctors and rescue teams for their work done," Pellegrini said. "I wish that such catastrophes would spare Slovakia in the future."
The collision's cause remains unclear as investigations continue. The incident has prompted an immediate response from emergency services and government officials.
The tragic event has disrupted travel plans for many passengers and raised concerns about railway safety measures at crossings. The authorities are working diligently to determine what led to this devastating accident.
Efforts are ongoing to assist those affected by this tragedy, with emergency services providing necessary support and transportation for stranded passengers. The community is rallying together to offer help during this difficult time.
The investigation will likely take some time as officials gather evidence and testimonies to understand how this collision occurred despite safety measures in place at the crossing.
This incident highlights the importance of rigorous safety protocols and swift emergency response to mitigate such tragedies' impact on lives and communities.
