Seven Fatalities Reported as Severe Storm Strikes Sao Paulo, Brazil, Causing Widespread Power Outages
A severe storm in Sao Paulo, Brazil, resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals and left approximately 1.4 million households without electricity. The storm, which struck on Friday night, brought wind gusts reaching up to 108 kph (67 mph), causing significant damage by toppling trees and power lines. Several airports were closed, and water services were disrupted in various areas.

Authorities reported that one person died when a tree fell on an outdoor stall. Six additional fatalities occurred in surrounding areas of Sao Paulo state. Initially, officials anticipated restoring power quickly. However, many neighbourhoods remained without electricity on Saturday, prompting authorities to advise residents to conserve water.
Impact on Utilities and Services
The majority of power outages occurred within the service area of Enel-Sao Paulo, a utility partly owned by AES Corporation. In May, AES announced plans to sell its 47% stake in the Brazilian unit for $640 million. Regulators have mandated an inspection of the utility, cautioning that failure to resolve outages promptly could lead to the termination of its private concession.
Enel reported that 17 high voltage transmission lines were impacted by the storm but did not specify when services would be fully restored. The utility is under pressure to address the situation swiftly to avoid regulatory penalties.
Wider Effects and Response
The storm's aftermath affected not only electricity but also transportation and water supply. Several airports were temporarily shut down due to safety concerns. The state government is working to restore normalcy as quickly as possible while urging residents to limit water usage until services are fully operational again.
Sao Paulo, home to 21 million people, faced significant challenges due to the storm's impact on infrastructure. The local government is coordinating with utility companies and emergency services to manage the crisis effectively.
Efforts are underway to clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure across affected areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, prioritising public safety and essential service restoration.
The recent events highlight the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme weather conditions. As Sao Paulo recovers from this storm, there is an ongoing focus on improving resilience against future natural disasters.
