Afghan Earthquakes Death Toll Rises To 2,445 As Men Dig Through Rubble To Rescue Victims
Men dug through rubble with their bare hands and shovels in western Afghanistan Sunday to rescue victims of powerful earthquakes that killed at least 2,000 people. Entire villages were flattened and hundreds are still trapped under the wreckage.
The Taliban administration on Sunday said that over 2,400 people were killed in earthquakes in Afghanistan, in the deadliest tremors that rocked the quake-prone mountainous country in years.
On October 9, the western region of Afghanistan was hit by a series of powerful earthquakes. The devastating event left entire villages flattened and countless victims trapped under the wreckage of collapsed houses. With limited resources and no shovels to aid in their rescue efforts, locals were forced to dig through rubble with their bare hands in desperate attempts to save those who remained buried.

A government spokesperson reported on Sunday that hundreds were still trapped beneath the debris while more than 1,000 individuals had been injured. It was also stated that over 1,300 homes had been destroyed by the tremors. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck a densely populated area near Herat, Afghanistan's fourth-largest city and was followed by strong aftershocks.
The Aftermath
Photographer Omid Haqjoo visited four affected villages on Sunday and provided a firsthand account of the harrowing scene he witnessed. Speaking to The Associated Press via phone from Herat, Haqjoo described how most people appeared dazed or shocked following the catastrophe; some were unable to speak while others could not stop crying or shouting out in grief.
Historical Context
If confirmed, this recent disaster would rank as one of Afghanistan's deadliest earthquakes within the last two decades. A Taliban government spokesman provided this toll on Sunday which has yet to be officially verified.
This is not an isolated incident for this geographically vulnerable country; it has experienced several severe seismic events over recent years due its location along major fault lines. In June 2022, eastern Afghanistan suffered another fatal earthquake which decimated stone and mud-brick homes across rugged mountainous regions and claimed at least 1,000 lives.
Facing Future Challenges
These recurring incidents highlight the urgent need for effective disaster planning and response mechanisms in Afghanistan. The country's geopolitical situation, coupled with its geographical vulnerabilities, exacerbates the challenges faced by locals during such calamities. Moreover, the lack of necessary tools and resources often seen in these situations further compounds the difficulties encountered during rescue efforts.
In conclusion, this tragic event underscores not only the relentless power of nature but also emphasizes on how preparedness can mitigate damage caused by such disasters. As Afghanistan continues to grapple with political instability and ongoing humanitarian crises, it is crucial that national and international entities prioritize initiatives aimed at bolstering emergency response capabilities while providing immediate aid to those affected by these devastating earthquakes.
