Pope Leo XIV Outlines Vision for Papacy, Identifies AI as Major Challenge for Humanity

Pope Leo XIV has highlighted artificial intelligence as a crucial issue for humanity while pledging to continue some of Pope Francis's priorities. In a move to establish his papacy, Leo visited a sanctuary south of Rome dedicated to the Madonna, significant to his Augustinian order and namesake, Pope Leo XIII. The sanctuary, managed by Augustinian friars, has been a pilgrimage site since the 15th century.

Pope Leo XIV Highlights AI Challenge

Commitment to Church Reforms

Leo, the first American pope, expressed his dedication to the reforms initiated by the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. He emphasised making the Catholic Church more inclusive and attentive to its followers. During his first formal audience with the cardinals who elected him, Leo cited Pope Francis's 2013 mission statement, "The Joy of the Gospel," as his guiding principle. He stressed the importance of a church that cares for the least and rejected.

Leo's visit to Genazzano was marked by townspeople gathering outside the main church housing the Madre del Buon Consiglio sanctuary. After praying in the church, he addressed them, acknowledging their gift and responsibility of having the Madonna among them. He offered a blessing before returning to the Vatican, stopping at St. Mary Major Basilica to pray at Francis's tomb.

AI and Social Teaching

Leo identified AI as a major challenge for humanity, impacting human dignity, justice, and labour. He linked this concern to his choice of name, inspired by Pope Leo XIII, who laid foundations for modern Catholic social thought with his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum. This document addressed workers' rights and capitalism during the industrial age.

The Vatican revealed that Leo would retain his motto and coat of arms from his time as bishop of Chiclayo, Peru. The motto "In Illo uno unum," from St. Augustine's sermon, signifies unity among Christians in Christ. His emblem features a pierced flaming heart and a book representing Scriptures.

Legacy of Pope Francis

Leo's speech in Italian at the Vatican's synod hall referenced mourning over Francis's death and reiterated Francis's emphasis on missionary work and collegial leadership. He highlighted the need for dialogue with contemporary society and attention to popular piety. Leo also mentioned Francis's call for an international treaty to regulate AI due to its potential threats.

Francis saw Robert Prevost as an heir apparent, moving him to lead a small Peruvian diocese in 2014 before becoming bishop and head of the Peruvian bishops' conference. Prevost later took over a key Vatican office vetting bishop nominations in 2023.

Quick Conclave Election

Leo was elected as the 267th pontiff on Thursday during the fourth ballot of an exceptionally fast conclave. Madagascar Cardinal Désiré Tsarahazana reported that Prevost received over 100 of 133 votes, surpassing the two-thirds majority required for election.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, considered a top contender for pope, congratulated Leo in Il Giornale di Vicenza. Parolin praised Leo's understanding of contemporary issues and leadership skills demonstrated during his time in Chiclayo and at the Vatican.

Leo wore a pectoral cross gifted by the Augustinian order when he became cardinal in 2023. It contains relics of St. Augustine and his mother, St. Monica, significant figures in early Christianity. The Augustinian order is dedicated to poverty, service, and evangelisation.

The new pope read from prepared texts during public appearances but seemed most comfortable speaking off-the-cuff in Spanish. His election marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church under his leadership while continuing some of Pope Francis's core priorities.
