Pope Francis Surprises Art Restorers During Visit to St Peter's Basilica

Pope Francis made an unexpected visit to St. Peter's Basilica, surprising art restorers working on the tomb of Pope Urban VIII. This marked his third unannounced appearance in a week. The Pope, recovering from illness, arrived in a wheelchair, adding to the excitement of those present.

Earlier in the week, Francis had thrilled attendees at a Jubilee Mass for the ill and met privately with King Charles III and Queen Camilla. His visit to the basilica coincided with the completion of restoration work on significant tombs, including those of Pope Urban VIII and Pope Paul II.

Restoration Projects and Jubilee Year

The restoration was part of a three-stage project for the Jubilee Holy Year, a tradition encouraging pilgrimages to Rome. The final stage involved the tombs sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Guglielmo della Porta. Pietro Zander, head of the necropolis section, noted that these tombs now appear more vibrant.

During his visit, Francis interacted with the restorers and other visitors. Lorena Araujo Pinheiro shared that they initially hesitated to approach him. However, the Pope invited them closer, expressing gratitude for their work.

Pope's Interaction with Restorers

Michela Malfatti recounted how Francis thanked them repeatedly. "He asked me if he could take my hand because his were cold," she said. The restorers were touched by his warmth and kindness during this interaction.

The Vatican explained that Francis was taking a break from his recovery at Santa Marta Domus. He requested to visit St. Peter's Basilica to pray, despite doctors advising him to avoid large gatherings due to his recent illness.

Enhancements in St. Peter's Basilica

In addition to the restoration work, new lighting was installed in the necropolis where popes are buried beneath the main altar. Stone ramps were also added for safety reasons, allowing quick evacuation if necessary.

A notable change in Urban VIII's tomb involved removing a sculpted cloth from a female figure called Charity. Zander explained that freeing her from this veil was not offensive, as malice is subjective.

Pope's Encouraging Visit

The Pope's decision to visit was seen as a positive sign by those involved in the restoration. "We take it like a blessing of the end of the work," Zander remarked, highlighting the significance of Francis' presence at this momentous occasion.
