Pope Francis Health Update: Vatican Says Catholic Church Head's Condition Is Critical

Pope Francis has been in the hospital for over a week due to pneumonia. His condition is serious, with doctors warning that sepsis could be a significant threat. The Vatican reported that he is experiencing a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis, requiring high oxygen levels. Despite being alert, he is in more pain than before, and his prognosis remains uncertain.

Francis, aged 88, was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed him with a complex lung infection involving viral, bacterial, and fungal elements. They prescribed rest and a mix of cortisone and antibiotics, along with supplemental oxygen as needed.

Potential Sepsis Risk

Dr Sergio Alfieri from Gemelli Hospital highlighted the risk of germs entering Francis' bloodstream, leading to sepsis. "Sepsis can cause organ failure and death," Alfieri stated. He emphasised the difficulty of overcoming sepsis given Francis' respiratory issues and age.

The Vatican confirmed that there was no evidence of sepsis as of Friday. However, they noted that Francis is responding positively to his medication regimen. This update was part of the first detailed report on his health status.

Resignation Speculations Addressed

Amidst rumours about potential resignation, the Vatican clarified there is no canon law provision for an incapacitated pope. Francis had previously written a resignation letter for such circumstances but remains conscious and active.

"He knows he's in danger," Dr Alfieri mentioned during a news conference at Gemelli Hospital. He added that Francis instructed them to communicate this awareness. The pope continues to eat and work despite his condition.

The Vatican's statement reassured that while Francis' situation is precarious, he remains alert and engaged in daily activities from his armchair. His medical team remains vigilant in monitoring his progress.
