Pope Francis Remains in Critical Condition with Early Kidney Failure Amid Global Prayers

Pope Francis remains in critical condition, battling pneumonia and a complex lung infection. The Vatican reported that the 88-year-old pontiff is alert and "well-oriented," despite early signs of kidney failure. He has not experienced further respiratory crises since Saturday night but continues to receive high-flow supplemental oxygen. Blood tests indicate mild kidney failure, but doctors say it is under control.

Pope Francis in Critical Condition with Kidney Issues

Prayers for the pope have poured in from around the globe, including his native Argentina and Cairo, the seat of Sunni Islam. In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged the Catholic community's concern, stating, "As our Holy Father Pope Francis is in very, very fragile health, and probably close to death." Dolan did not specify if he had additional information about the pope's condition.

Pope's Health and Global Support

Doctors have warned that sepsis poses a significant threat to Francis due to his pneumonia. However, as of Friday, there was no evidence of sepsis, and he was responding well to medication. The pope's medical team provided this update on his condition. Francis developed a low platelet count, known as thrombocytopenia, which can result from medication side effects or infections.

Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 after a weeklong bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection followed by pneumonia in both lungs. He was prescribed "absolute rest" along with cortisone and antibiotics, supplemented by oxygen when necessary.

Recent Decisions Reflect Awareness of Frailty

Francis has made several recent decisions indicating his awareness of aging and frailty. Last year, he revised funeral rites to simplify rituals while maintaining core elements like key moments between a pope's death and funeral. These changes reflect his wish for burial outside the Vatican.

In December, Francis appointed 21 new cardinals, most under age 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave for his successor. This increased voting-age cardinals to 140, exceeding St. John Paul II's limit of 120. However, several current electors will turn 80 this year, reducing the number.

Vatican Mass Celebrations

Francis was scheduled to celebrate Mass on Sunday morning at St. Peter's Basilica and ordain deacons for the Holy Year commemoration. Archbishop Rino Fisichella led the Mass instead and offered a special prayer for Francis before delivering the homily prepared by the pope. Fisichella told deacons that despite being hospitalized, they felt Pope Francis close to them.

A pre-written message from Francis expressed confidence in his hospitalization at Gemelli Hospital and requested prayers. It also noted the upcoming anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a "painful and shameful occasion for humanity." Meanwhile, Catholics in Buenos Aires prayed for him at the cathedral while the city's obelisk displayed "Francis, the city prays for you."

Global Prayers for Pope Francis

The grand imam of Al-Azhar in Cairo expressed well wishes for Francis' recovery through a Facebook post: "I pray to Allah to grant my dear brother, Pope Francis, a swift recovery and to bless him with good health and well-being so that he may continue his journey in serving humanity," wrote Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb.

Schoolchildren from Rome sent get-well cards to Gemelli Hospital while Italian bishops led rosary prayers and celebrated special Masses across Italy. The Catholic community worldwide continues to offer support during this challenging time for Pope Francis.

The Vatican doctors have stated that due to the complexity of Francis' clinical picture and awaiting drug therapy feedback, his prognosis remains reserved. Despite these challenges, prayers continue globally for his recovery as he undergoes treatment.
