Pope Francis Denounces Sexual Abuse as 'Demonic' in Light of French Church Scandal
Pope Francis described sexual abuse as "demonic" on Friday, addressing recent allegations against the late French priest Abbe Pierre. Abbe Pierre, who passed away in 2007, was a revered figure in France, known for his advocacy for the homeless and founding the Emmaus Community. This week, Emmaus International disclosed 17 new claims against him, adding to the seven previously revealed in July.

During a press conference on his return from Asia, Pope Francis was questioned about the Vatican's knowledge of Abbe Pierre's misconduct. He stated that the Holy See became aware of the abuse after Abbe Pierre's death. "He's a man who did so much good, but he's also a sinner. We have to speak clearly about these things and not hide them," he said. "Abuse is, in my judgment, something demonic because every type of abuse destroys the dignity of the person."
Emmaus International's Findings
Emmaus International reported that the new allegations involve behaviour similar to those initially reported. The incidents span from the 1950s to the 2000s and include "unsolicited breast touching and forced kisses," as well as more severe acts like sexual penetration with an adult woman and sexual contact with a child.
The revelations have caused outrage among French Catholics, for whom Abbe Pierre was an icon. The scandal mirrors another involving Jean Vanier, founder of the L'Arche movement for people with disabilities, who was also found guilty of misconduct with adult women.
Comparisons to Other Cases
This case is reminiscent of another involving Timorese Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo. Belo, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent campaign for independence, was sanctioned by the Vatican in 2022 for sexually abusing young boys. Although Pope Francis did not mention Belo by name during his visit to East Timor, he condemned "abuse" in general terms upon his arrival in Dili.
Emmaus International and the Abbe Pierre Foundation have taken steps to distance themselves from their founder. These measures include changing the foundation's name and Emmaus logos and closing a memorial dedicated to Abbe Pierre.
Reactions and Measures
The scandal has prompted significant reactions within France and beyond. Many are grappling with the duality of Abbe Pierre's legacy—his significant contributions to society versus his grave misconduct. Emmaus International's decision to reveal these allegations reflects a broader movement within institutions to address past abuses transparently.
The case underscores ongoing challenges within religious communities regarding accountability and transparency. It also highlights the importance of addressing historical abuses to prevent future occurrences.
The revelations about Abbe Pierre serve as a stark reminder that even those who have done considerable good can have deeply troubling aspects to their lives. The steps taken by Emmaus International aim to ensure that such abuses are not repeated and that victims' voices are heard and acknowledged.
