Security Measures and Official Statements

Susan Manko, UPMC's vice president of public relations, stated that law enforcement is currently handling the situation at the hospital. Employees not scheduled to work on Saturday were advised to remain at home. Families of patients arriving should go to the OSS building's parking lot across from the hospital.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, after being briefed on the situation, announced he was heading to the hospital. He assured that the facility is now "secure." UPMC Memorial, a five-story hospital with 104 beds, opened in 2019 in York, a city known for creating York Peppermint Patties in 1940.

Rising Gun Violence in Healthcare Settings

The shooting is part of an increasing trend of gun violence affecting US hospitals and medical centres. These incidents have made healthcare one of the most dangerous professions, with more nonfatal injuries from workplace violence than any other field, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2023, a similar incident occurred when a shooter killed a security guard at New Hampshire's state psychiatric hospital before being shot by a state trooper. In 2022, two workers were killed at a Dallas hospital by a man visiting for his child's birth. Another attack in May 2022 saw a gunman open fire in an Atlanta medical centre waiting room, killing one woman and injuring four others.

In June 2022, a gunman killed his surgeon and three others at a Tulsa medical office due to dissatisfaction with post-surgery pain management. These events highlight the growing threat of violence within healthcare facilities across the nation.

The recent shooting at UPMC Memorial underscores the urgent need for increased security measures in hospitals to protect both staff and patients from such violent incidents.
