Poland's Leader Seeks Release of National Jailed for Espionage in Congo
In a significant diplomatic effort, Poland's President Andrzej Duda has engaged in discussions with Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, aiming to secure the release of Polish national Mariusz Majewski, who faces life imprisonment in the Democratic Republic of Congo on charges of espionage. The 52-year-old was apprehended by Congolese forces in February and subsequently tried in a military court, accused of engaging in espionage activities.

Majewski's arrest followed allegations of him nearing the frontline alongside Mobondo militiamen, unauthorized movement along the frontline, photographing sensitive areas, and covertly observing military operations. The Mobondo militia has been a key player in the intercommunal violence that has plagued southwestern Congo since 2022. Despite these grave accusations, Majewski was convicted last week and now faces a lifetime behind bars.
The specifics of Majewski's detention location remain undisclosed. Wojciech Kolarski, an aide to President Duda, refrained from commenting on the outcomes of the presidential dialogue but emphasized Poland's commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad, especially those caught in dire circumstances.
Majewski's family has raised concerns about his health and maintains that he is merely a traveller, not a spy. Echoing this sentiment, Pawel Wronski, a spokesman for Poland's Foreign Ministry, clarified that Majewski is a travel enthusiast who found himself in Congo due to unforeseen events and a lack of understanding of local customs.
The political landscape in Congo is fraught with challenges, including a recent coup attempt that was thwarted by the Congolese army. This incident led to the arrest of several individuals, including foreigners and US citizens. Amidst this turmoil, Polish authorities remain hopeful for Majewski's release, asserting that he has no involvement in the political unrest gripping the nation. Notably, Poland lacks a diplomatic mission within Congo, complicating efforts to navigate Majewski's precarious situation.
This case underscores the complexities facing individuals abroad and the intricate diplomatic negotiations that can ensue from their predicaments. As discussions between Poland and Congo continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that brings Mariusz Majewski safely home.
