PM Narendra Modi flags off train service in Sri Lankan town
Colombo, March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in the north-western Sri Lankan town of Talaimannar and flagged off a train service there. The service was restored after two decades of civil war that had left the island-nation ravaged. [PM Modi in Jaffna today]
Modi also unveiled a plaque inaugurating Talaimannar 1650 Pier Railway station.
PM Modi also visited the ancient city of Anuradhapura, located about 206 kilometres from capital Colombo, where he offered prayers at the sacred Mahabodhi tree. He was received at Anuradhapura helipad by dignitaries and given a Guard of Honour.
Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera was also present at the rituals along with the Indian prime minister. Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, who assumed office in January, also accompanied Modi.
