PM Modi's Thoughtful Gifts: Antique Train Model And Pashmina Shawl For President Biden, First Lady

In a gesture symbolizing strong diplomatic ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up the Quad leaders summit by presenting U.S.President Joe Biden with an exquisite antique silver train model and a beautifully crafted pashmina shawl to First Lady Jill Biden during his recent visit to the United States.

A Symbol of Partnership

The silver vintage train model, made from 92.5% silver and crafted by skilled artisans from Maharashtra, reflects the rich artistic heritage of India. Its intricate metalwork features repoussé techniques metal is hammered from the reverse to create raised designs and delicate filigree work, showcasing the craftsmanship that honours the era of steam locomotives.

Notably, the train model is inscribed with "Delhi-Delaware," underscoring the significance of the occasion, as the Quad summit was held in Delaware, President Biden's home state.

A Touch of Tradition

In addition to the trained model, PM Modi gifted a stunning pashmina shawl, elegantly presented in a paper-mâché box, to First Lady Jill Biden. This shawl highlights the unique textile traditions of Jammu and Kashmir, known for their intricate designs and cultural significance.

Pashmina shawls are cherished heirlooms, often passed down through generations. Made from the fine winter coat of the Changthangi goat, native to Ladakh, these shawls are hand-combed and spun using techniques that have been preserved by artisans for generations. The use of natural dyes derived from local plants and minerals adds to their beauty, resulting in captivating colours.

Traditionally, pashmina shawls are housed in exquisite papier-mâché boxes from Jammu and Kashmir, which serve as both functional storage and artistic displays.
