In the same year, Modi was designated as the chief minister of Gujarat by the party. In 2013, he was named as the BJP's campaign committee chief and subsequently positioned as the prime ministerial candidate. In the 2014 elections, Modi led BJP to its most successful performance up to that point in the Lok Sabha elections, with 282 seats secured.

It marked the first instance since 1984 that a party had surpassed the majority threshold independently. Five years later, the BJP secured 303 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.
