PM Modi Invites President Zelenskyy to India, Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to visit India during their comprehensive discussions. Jaishankar also addressed questions about India's energy trade with Russia. He explained that the topic was discussed with the Ukrainian side. "Yes, it did. I wouldn't say at great length, but what we did was to explain to the Ukrainian side what was the energy market scenario," he said. He elaborated on the tight energy market due to sanctions on many producers and the importance of maintaining reasonable and stable oil prices for the international economy.

India, being the world's third-largest oil-consuming and importing nation, purchased USD 2.8 billion worth of crude oil from Russia in July. This made Russia India's largest supplier of crude oil, surpassing even China. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) reported that Russian oil became available at a discount after some European nations stopped buying from Moscow following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine's Expectations from India

Zelenskyy expressed his desire for India to support Ukraine. He said, "I read a lot about your big and great country. It's very interesting," adding, "I very much need your country on our side."
