PM Modi In UK: Trade Agreement, Extradition & Khalistanis On Agenda
During his visit to the UK, PM Modi will engage with leaders to discuss a Free Trade Agreement, extradition requests, and Khalistani groups, highlighting India-UK relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London for a two-day visit to the United Kingdom, marking the start of his two-nation tour. Upon arrival, he was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian community. Expressing gratitude, PM Modi shared on social media, "Touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in the UK. Their affection and passion towards India's progress is truly heartening."
During this visit, PM Modi will engage with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other prominent leaders to discuss various issues, including a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK. This agreement, finalised in May after three years of negotiations, is expected to benefit 99% of Indian exports by eliminating tariffs.

Free Trade Agreement Benefits
The FTA aims to facilitate British firms in exporting whisky, cars, and other products to India while boosting overall trade. Officials have indicated that India will gain comprehensive market access across all sectors with tariff elimination on about 99% of product categories, covering nearly 100% of trade values, according to a report in The Times of India.
In his departure statement, PM Modi highlighted the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UK. He noted significant progress across various sectors such as trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health, and people-to-people ties.
Extradition Requests
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned that PM Modi will address extradition requests for Vijay Mallya, Lalit Modi, and Nirav Modi. These individuals face financial charges in India but currently reside in the UK. Misri stated that discussions on these matters have been ongoing between both countries.
"There are a few questions related to fugitives from Indian law and Indian justice in the UK," Misri said. "These have been a matter of discussion between both sides." He added that there is a legal process involved in such requests which they continue to follow closely with their UK partners.
Khalistani Groups Concern
The presence of Khalistani groups in the UK is another issue PM Modi plans to raise during his visit. According to Misri, this concern has been flagged with British officials previously and will continue to be addressed as it affects not only India but also social stability in the UK.
"The issue of the presence of Khalistani extremists and bodies close to these people is something we have brought to our partners' attention," Misri said. "This is a matter of concern not only to us but should also be a concern to our partners because it impacts social cohesion."
Additionally, PM Modi is expected to meet King Charles III and hold discussions with business leaders from both nations during his stay in London.
