PM Modi Pays Tribute to 'Good Maharaja' Among Others in Warsaw
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the importance of humanity and compassion as he paid tribute at three memorials in Warsaw. These included the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar monument, honouring the Good Maharaja who sheltered over 1,000 Polish children during World War II. Modi's visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years.

Humanitarian Legacy of Jam Saheb
The Jam Saheb of Nawanagar Memorial in Warsaw commemorates Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja's humanitarian efforts. He provided refuge to Polish children displaced by World War II. Known affectionately as Dobry Maharaja in Poland, his legacy is deeply respected. "Humanity and compassion are vital foundations of a just and peaceful world," Modi posted on X, sharing photos from the event.
The memorial, located at the Square of the Good Maharaja, was unveiled in October 2014. It stands as a testament to the gratitude felt by the Polish people towards Jam Saheb. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that eight Polish schools are named after him, reflecting his enduring impact.
Valivade-Kolhapur Camp Memorial
Modi also paid respects at the Valivade-Kolhapur camp memorial. This site honours the Royal Family of Kolhapur for sheltering Polish women and children during World War II. "Inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Royal Family ensured dignity for Polish refugees," Modi stated on X, posting photos from his visit.
The Valivade camp housed around 5,000 Polish refugees. The MEA highlighted that Modi met with descendants of those who lived in the camp, underscoring the historical connection between India and Poland.
Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino
Prime Minister Modi also visited the Monument to the Battle of Monte Cassino in Warsaw. This monument honours soldiers from Poland, India, and other countries who fought together in this significant World War II battle. "Our shared history and enduring ties continue to inspire," noted the MEA on X.
The battle saw Indian and Polish troops fighting side by side, symbolising deep-rooted ties between the two nations. Modi's homage at this site highlights these historical connections that continue to be cherished.
During his visit, Modi met with descendants of Polish people who were given shelter by Jam Saheb. This meeting highlighted a special bond between India and Poland that remains strong today. The MEA remarked that this historical connection continues to be nurtured and valued by both countries.
The Prime Minister's visit to these memorials underscores India's commitment to remembering shared histories and fostering international relationships based on compassion and humanity. His trip serves as a reminder of the enduring ties between India and Poland.
