Tragic New Year's Attack in New Orleans
In a devastating attack on New Year's Day, an Army veteran drove a pickup truck with an ISIS flag into a crowd in New Orleans, killing 15 people and injuring at least 30 others. The assailant opened fire on responding police officers but was killed in a retaliatory exchange of gunfire.
FBI Deems the Attack as Terrorism
Initially dismissed, the FBI later confirmed the incident as an " act of terrorism." Investigators found multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and pipe bombs, all wired for remote detonation, adding to the suspicion that the driver may not have acted alone.
Statements from Political Leaders
President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow and affirmed that the FBI was investigating the event to understand its motives and determine if any further threats to public safety exist. Former President Donald Trump condemned the attack as "pure evil" and speculated that it was linked to illegal immigration, further fueling a national debate on crime rates.
