PM Modi Joins G7 Summit in Italy, Engages in Bilateral Talks with Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a significant visit to Apulia, southern Italy, to engage in the Outreach session of the G7 Summit. His agenda includes a series of pivotal bilateral discussions with global leaders on Friday. Announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Modi's participation underscores India's proactive stance on international collaboration and dialogue.

Modi's schedule is densely packed, featuring a summit session titled "Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa-Mediterranean," which will see Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and Pope Francis among the attendees. The inclusion of Pope Francis highlights the session's importance, with Modi also set to engage in bilateral talks with him. This visit marks Modi's first international trip in his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, emphasizing the significance he places on global forums like the G7 Summit.
The Prime Minister expressed enthusiasm for his discussions at the G7 Summit, aiming to foster global betterment and enhance people's lives. Recalling his previous visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021 and Meloni's visits to India last year, Modi highlighted the deepening bilateral relations between India and Italy. He emphasized the shared commitment to bolstering cooperation across various regions, including the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean.
The Outreach session will focus on critical areas such as artificial intelligence and energy, aiming to align with the outcomes of the G20 Summit hosted by India. Modi's anticipation for productive discussions reflects India's role in addressing issues pertinent to the Global South. The G20 Summit in New Delhi, attended by leaders now gathering in Apulia under Italy's presidency, underscores this collaborative spirit.
Georgia Meloni, hosting the summit in Apulia, articulated a strong message of solidarity with the Global South. Her choice of Apulia as the venue symbolizes an intent to strengthen dialogue with these nations, underlining the G7's commitment under Italian leadership.
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is poised to dominate discussions at the summit. With Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in attendance, leaders are expected to explore avenues for decisive support to Ukraine. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been vocal about the need for "decisive" and "creative" efforts to support Ukraine, announcing significant bilateral assistance aimed at addressing humanitarian and recovery needs.
India's stance on promoting "dialogue and diplomacy" as the optimal resolution strategy remains firm. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra reiterated Modi's message that "today's era is not of war," highlighting India's commitment to assisting those affected by global conflicts. The summit also serves as a platform for India to share its perspectives with world leaders, furthering discussions on challenges faced by the Global South.
In addition to India, Italy has extended invitations to leaders from 11 developing countries across Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region. This move signifies a broadened dialogue scope at the G7 Summit, aiming at inclusive solutions that address global challenges comprehensively.
