The Incident

According to authorities' reports, Officers Richard Mendez and Raul Ortiz had just reported for duty around 11 pm last Thursday when they heard glass breaking nearby. They spotted several people attempting to break into a car parked within the premises of Philadelphia International Airport. A confrontation followed this observation which led to both officers and one suspect getting shot.Mendez who was aged 50 and had served on the force for over two decades took four bullets and was declared dead upon arrival at a hospital. In honour of him as per tradition when officers are killed in line of duty; his handcuffs were used on Martinez Fernandez during his arrest.Ortiz however survived after sustaining only one gunshot wound to his arm; he has since been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.

The Getaway

In their getaway attempt post-shooting incident; the suspects made use of an SUV which had reportedly been stolen about a week prior to these events unfolding. This same vehicle was later spotted at a hospital dropping off 18-year-old Jesus Herman Madera Duran, who authorities believe was involved in the confrontation with the officers. Duran had sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, abdomen and left arm; he was pronounced dead approximately around 11:30 pm on Thursday.Authorities are of the belief that Duran had at least three accomplices and one of them is suspected to have fired the weapon which caused injuries to all three victims.
