Peter Pellegrini to Succeed Caputová as Slovakia's President in Recent Election
In a significant political shift, Peter Pellegrini, a close ally of Slovakia's populist Prime Minister Robert Fico, has emerged victorious in the country's presidential election, marking a departure from the pro-Western stance of his predecessor. The election, held in Bratislava on April 7, saw Pellegrini securing 53.85% of the votes against former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok, who received 46.14%, as per the data from over 98% of polling stations counted by the Statistics Office.

Korcok, acknowledging his defeat, expressed disappointment but congratulated Pellegrini on his victory. This election result propels Pellegrini to be Slovakia's sixth president since its independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993. The outgoing president, Zuzana Caputová, known for her support of Ukraine amidst Russian aggression, chose not to seek re-election for the largely ceremonial role.
The presidency in Slovakia holds significant powers including the appointment of the prime minister post-elections, swearing in the new government, appointing Constitutional Court judges, vetoing laws (subject to parliamentary override), and challenging laws at the Constitutional Court. The president also has the authority to pardon convicts.
Pellegrini's victory is seen as consolidating Fico's influence across strategic national positions. Fico's Smer Direction party had previously won parliamentary elections with a pro-Russian and anti-American stance. Pellegrini himself leads the left-wing Hlas Voice party, which finished third in the elections and formed a governing coalition with Fico's party and the ultranationalist Slovak National Party.
This shift towards a pro-Russian orientation has sparked concerns among critics who fear Slovakia might deviate from its traditionally pro-Western trajectory, mirroring Hungary under Viktor Orbán. The new government has already ceased arms deliveries to Ukraine, triggering widespread protests across Slovakia against Fico's policies and perceived threats to the rule of law.
Pellegrini, 48, previously served as Fico's deputy in Smer and took over as prime minister in 2018 following anti-government protests triggered by the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée. Despite temporarily distancing himself from Fico after Smer's loss in the 2020 elections, Pellegrini's recent win signifies a political comeback for Fico after two consecutive presidential election defeats.
Korcok, with a background as ambassador to the United States and Germany and roles within NATO and the European Union, had campaigned on maintaining Slovakia's EU and NATO commitments. His defeat raises questions about the future direction of Slovakia's foreign policy and internal governance under Pellegrini's presidency.
