Senior PTI Leader Pervez Elahi Released on Bail in Corruption Case

In a significant development from Pakistan, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Chief Minister of Punjab, was released from prison on Tuesday. This came after the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted him bail in a case related to alleged illegal appointments in the Punjab Assembly during his tenure as chief minister. LHC Justice Sultan Tanvir Ahmed ordered Elahi's release earlier that day, setting his bail at Rs 500,000 with two sureties of the same amount.

Elahi, aged 78, returned to his residence, Zahoor Elahi Palace, following his release. He expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his detention, thanking Allah Almighty for giving him strength and acknowledging the judges who upheld "truth and justice." The administration of Kot Lakhpat Jail Lahore confirmed Elahi's release. He had been moved to this jail earlier in the month.

The former chief minister also voiced his concern for the people of Gujrat, lamenting the injustices and oppression they have faced. He highlighted electoral malpractice in the region, stating, "Our mandate was stolen in Gujrat." Elahi made it clear that he would not engage in dialogue with his brother Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s children until their mandate was restored. He accused Interior Minister and former caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi of being behind his arrest and the injustices he faced.

Elahi was arrested on June 3 last year in connection with illegal recruitments of 12 Grade-17 officers in the provincial assembly. He was accused of altering the results of the testing service to select candidates of his choice. His release marks a pivotal moment for PTI and its leadership as they navigate through Pakistan's complex political landscape.
